Teachers and school staff
Teachers, and the license that follows you
A teacher’s license is held by the state, and the district that employs you can send it a report. Resigning does not always stop that report.
Tabitha Sutter handles most of our work for teachers, counselors and school administrators. She is usually called at the point where the district has opened an investigation and offered a way for it to end quickly. Before you accept that offer, we read it with you.
What people do not know about the district’s offer
- A resignation or a settlement agreement can still be reported to the state.
- A “neutral” reference letter does not control what the state is told.
- The state’s own file starts separately and runs on its own clock.
- What you sign may bind you about what you can say later, including to the state.
None of this means you should refuse to resolve a district matter. It means a district matter and a license matter are two matters, and you need a plan for both.
Where it begins
Files that start like this
Educators call us after one of these.
- 01
A student or parent complaint
These are investigated by the district first. What you say to the district is available to the state later.
- 02
A social-media post or a private message
Context matters and screenshots remove it. We collect the whole thread before anyone draws a conclusion.
- 03
A report to the state after a resignation
If the district reports you, you are entitled to answer. The deadline to do so is short.
- 04
An arrest, a charge or a finding from years ago
Renewal forms ask. An old matter you have not disclosed is often worse than the matter.
- 05
A testing or exam irregularity
These have their own process and their own language. Do not guess at it.
Questions teachers ask first
Educators ask
Should I resign to end the district’s investigation?
Not before you know what resigning will be reported as. Ask us to read the proposed agreement first; it often changes what you decide.
Can I teach in another state while this is pending?
That state will usually ask whether any license of yours is under investigation. Answer truthfully; we help you word the answer.
Do you also represent me against the district?
We can advise on how the two matters affect each other. If you need a lawyer for an employment claim against the district, we will say so and help you find one.
Will my school find out I called a lawyer?
No. Calls and messages are confidential, and we do not contact your employer without your direction.
